Is India on Sale? -- A Debate on History, Capital, and Conscience

The phrase “India is on sale” reflects a deep anxiety shaped by history. For centuries, India suffered systematic extraction by the British, the Portuguese, the Mughals, and other invaders. Wealth was drained, institutions weakened, and economic autonomy eroded.

Against this historical memory, today’s dependence on foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign loans for social infrastructure feels, to many, like a modern continuation of loss, especially when India generates substantial tax revenue of its own.

Critics argue that large-scale FDI and external borrowing risk recreating extraction in subtler forms. Profits are often repatriated, strategic sectors are influenced, and policy space is constrained. Building roads, railways, health, and education through foreign loans burdens future generations with repayment. The question arises: if domestic resources exist, why outsource sovereignty?

Adding to this concern is an uncomfortable internal truth: India’s wealth is not only flowing outward, but also being siphoned off from within. Corruption on a mass scale involving politicians, administrative officers, police, and middlemen has drained public funds meant for development. Enormous amounts of illicit wealth are reportedly stashed in foreign tax havens such as Swiss banks. This internal loot weakens the moral authority of governance far more than foreign capital ever could.

Supporters of globalization respond that FDI is not colonial loot but negotiated capital that brings technology, jobs, and global integration. The real failure, they argue, lies in weak regulation, poor accountability, and a lack of long-term vision.

The real debate is not foreign versus domestic, but who benefits and who decides. India is not weak, nor poor in spirit or resources, but it risks being undervalued by its own custodians.

Wake up, India!

For the first time, I wrote a poem, and that too for India.

Wake up, India.

Remember your past, recognize your might.

Show the way forward, from darkness to light.

Wake up, India.

You were the land where wisdom rose, and questions shaped the soul,

Where knowledge flowed like living streams, making broken worlds a whole.

Wake up, India.

From sacred rivers’ timeless flow to knowledge deeply sown,

Your strength lies not in gold, but in the truths you’ve always known.

Wake up, India.

From gurukul fires to temple halls, from forest paths to town,

The lamp of thought was never dimmed, though empires rose and drowned.

Wake up, India.

Dharma was your compass true, not power, fear, or greed,

Work was yajna, service faith, and duty answered need.

Wake up, India.

Yet chains were forged by foreign greed, and silence bred by fear,

When duty slept, when conscience bent, and justice disappeared.

Wake up, India.

The lamp still waits in waiting hands, the dawn is not denied,

Through truth and courage, thought and toil, let ignorance subside.

Wake up, India.

Let truth be power, work be prayer, let leaders serve the land,

When people rise with honest hearts, no chain can hold their hand.

Wake up, India.

Stand calm, stand just, let courage lead, let conscience be your sight,

And India shall rise once more, the path, the flame, the light.

Wake up, India.

क्या भारत बिक्री पर है? -- इतिहास, पूंजी और नैतिकता पर एक विमर्श

“क्या भारत बिक्री पर है?” यह वाक्य केवल एक राजनीतिक नारा नहीं, बल्कि इतिहास से उपजी गहरी चिंता का प्रतिबिंब है। सदियों तक भारत ने ब्रिटिशों, पुर्तगालियों, मुगलों और अन्य आक्रमणकारियों द्वारा व्यवस्थित आर्थिक शोषण सहा। देश की संपत्ति बाहर ले जाई गई, संस्थाएँ कमजोर हुईं और आर्थिक स्वायत्तता को गहरा आघात पहुँचा।

इसी ऐतिहासिक स्मृति के कारण आज प्रत्यक्ष विदेशी निवेश (FDI) और सामाजिक अवसंरचना के लिए विदेशी ऋणों पर निर्भरता कई लोगों को उस पुराने शोषण का आधुनिक रूप प्रतीत होती है, विशेषकर तब जब भारत स्वयं पर्याप्त कर-राजस्व उत्पन्न करता है।

आलोचकों का तर्क है कि बड़े पैमाने पर विदेशी निवेश और बाहरी ऋण सूक्ष्म रूपों में फिर से आर्थिक निर्भरता और संसाधनों के निष्कर्षण को जन्म दे सकते हैं। विदेशी कंपनियाँ अपने लाभ का बड़ा हिस्सा वापस अपने देशों में ले जाती हैं, रणनीतिक क्षेत्रों पर प्रभाव स्थापित करती हैं और कभी-कभी नीति-निर्माण की स्वतंत्रता को भी सीमित कर देती हैं। सड़कों, रेलमार्गों, स्वास्थ्य और शिक्षा जैसी बुनियादी सुविधाओं के निर्माण हेतु विदेशी ऋण लेना भविष्य की पीढ़ियों पर ऋण-भार डालता है। ऐसे में प्रश्न उठता है कि यदि देश के पास पर्याप्त घरेलू संसाधन हैं, तो आर्थिक संप्रभुता को क्यों गिरवी रखा जाए?

इस चिंता के साथ एक और असहज सत्य जुड़ा हुआ है। भारत की संपत्ति केवल बाहर नहीं जा रही, बल्कि भीतर से भी लूटी जा रही है। राजनेताओं, प्रशासनिक अधिकारियों, पुलिस तंत्र और बिचौलियों से जुड़ा व्यापक भ्रष्टाचार विकास के लिए निर्धारित सार्वजनिक धन को निगलता रहा है। अवैध रूप से अर्जित विशाल संपत्ति विदेशी टैक्स हेवन और स्विस बैंकों जैसे सुरक्षित ठिकानों में जमा होने की बातें अक्सर सामने आती रही हैं। यह आंतरिक लूट शासन की नैतिक विश्वसनीयता को विदेशी पूंजी से कहीं अधिक क्षति पहुँचाती है।

वैश्वीकरण के समर्थक इसका प्रतिवाद करते हैं। उनके अनुसार FDI कोई औपनिवेशिक लूट नहीं, बल्कि परस्पर सहमति से आने वाली पूंजी है, जो तकनीक, रोजगार और वैश्विक बाज़ारों तक पहुँच प्रदान करती है। वास्तविक समस्या विदेशी निवेश नहीं, बल्कि कमजोर नियमन, जवाबदेही की कमी और दीर्घकालिक दृष्टि का अभाव है।

अंततः वास्तविक बहस विदेशी और घरेलू पूंजी के बीच नहीं है। मूल प्रश्न यह है कि लाभ किसे मिलता है और निर्णय कौन लेता है। भारत न तो कमजोर है और न ही संसाधनों तथा आत्मबल से गरीब। किंतु खतरा इस बात का है कि उसके अपने ही संरक्षक उसकी वास्तविक क्षमता और मूल्य को कम आँक रहे हैं।

मैने ज़िंदगी मे पहली बार कविता लिखी, और वह भी भारत के लिए

जागो, भारत।

अपने अतीत को स्मरण करो, अपनी शक्ति को पहचानो,

अंधकार से प्रकाश की ओर, मार्ग स्वयं दिखलाओ।

जागो, भारत।

तुम वह धरती हो जहाँ ज्ञान जागा, जहाँ प्रश्नों ने आत्मा को गढ़ा,

जहाँ विचारों की नदियाँ बहती रहीं, टूटी दुनिया को जोड़ा।

जागो, भारत।

पवित्र नदियों की अविरल धारा से, गहरे बोए गए ज्ञान तक,

तुम्हारी शक्ति सोने-चांदी में नहीं, उन सत्यों में है जो सदा रहे अडिग।

जागो, भारत।

गुरुकुल की अग्नि से मंदिरों तक, वनों से नगरों की राहे,

विचार का दीप कभी बुझा नहीं, चाहे साम्राज्य आए और ढह जाएँ।

जागो, भारत।

धर्म था तुम्हारा सच्चा पथ, न भय, न लोभ, न अधिकार,

कर्म था यज्ञ, सेवा श्रद्धा, कर्तव्य बना जीवन-आधार।

जागो, भारत।

पर लालच ने जंजीरें गढ़ीं, और भय ने मौन रचा,

जब कर्तव्य सो गया, अंतरात्मा झुकी, न्याय ओझल हुआ।

जागो, भारत।

दीप आज भी प्रतीक्षा में है, प्रभात से इनकार नहीं,

सत्य, साहस, श्रम और चिंतन से, अज्ञान का हो संहार यहीं।

जागो, भारत।

सत्य को शक्ति बनने दो, कर्म को प्रार्थना मानो,

ईमानदार हृदय जब उठ खड़े हों, कोई बेड़ी न पहचानो।

जागो, भारत।

शांत रहो, न्याय पर टिके रहो, साहस को अपनी दृष्टि बनाओ,

भारत फिर उठेगा एक बार, पथ भी वही, ज्वाला भी, प्रकाश भी वही।

जागो, भारत।
