Preparing for Japan
Before touring Japan, it is helpful to understand some basic cultural practices. Cleanliness is highly valued, so visitors should avoid littering and always keep public spaces tidy. Garbage disposal can be confusing because trash is separated into categories such as burnable, plastics, cans, and bottles. Many restrooms include washlets, which have buttons to spray and clean. Use them carefully. Men must use the toilet in a seated position. If you spill your urine outside, clean it using a tissue paper. This is applicable even in airplanes. In most places, people walk and stand on the left side, especially on escalators. It is also useful to pick up an English train map, as Japan’s railway network is large and busy. Following the schedule is very important. Whether it is a train or a bus, all transportation runs on schedule. Take care of your clothing as well. Japan can be very cold or very hot, so wear clean, appropriate clothing according to the season. It is better to wear walking or jogging shoes. Do not wear slippers or sandals. Knowing these customs helps ensure a smooth and respectful travel experience.
